Our Founder
Story
The Catalina Tile Experience offers visitors an authentic opportunity to share a part of island culture. Silver Canyon Pottery, which has been in operation since 1988 in Avalon, is the genesis for the experience. Founded by local resident Robin Cassidy, the studio started out as a production pottery shop. Thousands of mugs, plates and bowls later, a chance conversation with a fellow Islander — who happened to be in charge of maintaining the town’s historic Catalina Tile — led to a new direction. Many of the downtown tiles were in terrible shape. A little experimentation and 20 donated tiles set the company on a new course. The tile installations of Avalon now feature about 40% reproduction tiles made by Silver Canyon Pottery, which has also created new installations at the City Hall complex, The Avalon Hotel and countless private commissions. Tiles are available in several retail stores in Avalon and we create popular finisher medals for the annual full marathon.

We love Silver Canyon Pottery and we love Robin!! This was truly one of the best experiences I have ever had—my Mom and I took the tile making class and I think we will remember it forever. Robin (the teacher) is so knowledgeable about the history of Catalina Island as well as the science of tile/pottery making. She answered every question we had and made the experience very easy and fun. We learned so much and I am SO happy we chose to do this experience. Our tiles are beautiful and we can’t wait to put them up in our houses. If you are coming to Catalina this is a MUST DO!! You won’t regret it!!!

Wow!!! What a super fun and unique experience! Robin is the absolute sweetest! She’s hilarious and so knowledgeable. She makes sure everyone is comfortable and confident in the tile making. We had such a fun time!! You get to pick the tiles you want to make, make them, and choose the glaze colors for the final product. You’re right by the beach in an adorable pottery studio. Absolutely worth it and will be doing this again next time I visit the island!!!

A must-do Catalina experience!!Robin is such a delight, and a true expert at her craft. I booked this as a group activity for my grandma's 88th birthday on the island, and I'm so glad I did. Robin is knowledgeable about the island and its history, friendly and talkative during the workshop, and and incredible artist. I loved getting to see around her studio and learning about her previous projects. She was hired to restore tiles on the main street in Avalon, so you know she is good! The workshop experience was great. Robin arranged a taxi service for our group which was incredibly convenient (especially since we had an 88 year old and a person with a broken leg!) She was accommodating to our needs and helped make sure everyone had a good time and was successful at making the tiles. If you are worried "I'm not artistic enough for this!" don't worry, you can definitely do this 😁If you've ever admired the tiles on the Avalon waterfront, book this experience now! You won't regret it!

By far the best thing we did in Catalina! My husband & ended up having a session with Robin by ourselves. She insisted on picking us up downtown so we didn't have to get a ride to her place. At the studio, she gave us a thorough and fascinating abbreviated history of the island, its geology, and the history of tile artwork on Catalina. The tile-making was so fun. Robin did a great job of explaining all the steps to us, monitoring to make sure we did it right, then let us do our second tiles by ourselves. (Love that we each got two tiles instead of just one.) She even had us put holes in the back so they can be hung on the wall. She glazed the tiles for us and they arrived in the mail less than 2 months later. We're very grateful to Robin for the unique experience and souvenirs--truly a one-of-a-kind experience! If you are thinking about trying it, do it!

We had an amazing visit to this amazing pottery on Catalina! My mom and I were in port on a cruise ship and looking for a unique experience. Robin picked us up right in the middle of Avalon (short walk), and took us to her pottery. We learned about the history of the island and the tiles that adorn the walls and buildings. Her pottery is covered with photos and pieces of the history, and she's a great story teller. After that, we selected designs and colors, and made our own tiles. Robin's guidance made it fun and easy. I can't wait for them to show up in the mail! I highly recommend this experience for anyone visiting the island. It is a true gem!

The highlight of our time on Catalina Island! Robin, the owner, makes the experience so authentic and her knowledge on the history of the island & tile making was just amazing. We are so happy to have taken her course, the group size was small, and the tiles you get to come away with are such great memories. Will visit again next time we're on the island.

We had a wonderful time learning about the history of Santa Catalina Island, the types of stoned and gems indigenous to the island (wow!), the history of pottery on the island, and the intricacies of clay pottery making. Robin is an excellent educator and teacher, making it easy for us to make our own tiles while assuring that they will turn out without breaking. Her work can be seen throughout the town of Avalon as she has been/continues to be commissioned to recreate the historical tiles that are an integral part of the structures throughout town. I highly recommend this experience in her "out of the way/fray" studio in the Pebbly Beach area (she'll even provide transportation between Avalon and her studio).

Robin is an excellent teacher about pottery but also the history of Catalina and the Native American indigenous population that lived on the Island. I've been to Catalina so many times and have done all the touristy things, this was definitely unique and interesting plus you get 2 tiles that you made! Recommend to anyone visiting the Island.

We were a little sleepy after lunch but did absorb everything Robin taught us about the history of Catalina, pottery, and tile making. This is a super activity to do if you research ahead of time and happen to be on the island during the cruise ship days. Get out of the crowds and have fun making tiles. She also has beautiful tiles for sale, just ask!

This is a MUST DO while visiting Catalina. Not only do you get to make your very own Catalina Tile of your choosing, Robin shares her extensive expertise on the history (including ancient and pre-history) of the island and the town of Avalon. She guides you through the simple, but important, steps to making your tiles with patience and helpful guidance. You can purchase her work at the studio or find it at The Steamer Trunk shop in town. Highly recommended.

Highlight of my trip to Catalina! I have always been a fan of Catalina tiles and was excited to have a chance to make my own. The owner made the experience personal and most satisfying. She made sure our tiles were not going to crack in the kiln, and during the process shared stories about Catalina and the island's wonderful, natural resources. Highly recommend when you need a change from the busyness of the downtown.

Always on the lookout for new adventures and activities on the island, and the Discover Catalina Tile Making Experience at Silver Canyon Pottery did not disappoint. Robin not only shares her historical knowledge of Catalina Island and Avalon, but some rich history of Southern California as well. Nothing intimidating here, just a very casual and relaxing experience that can be enjoyed by anyone. Can’t wait to see our finished tiles and the numbers we ordered for our house address. If you enjoy atypical experiences, then you won’t want to pass up visiting Robin and Bailey. At the least, I would recommend stopping by to browse her inventory. From Avalon they are a nice walk along Pebbly Beach or a very short one from the Buffalo Nickle.

What a unique experience the tile making was! Robin is SO knowledgeable about the history of the island and its pottery. The actual tile making part was both fun and soothing while being 100% accessible for literally anyone of any age or ability. Plus then you get these precious keepsake tiles delivered to you a few weeks later which is like Christmas!

My experience at Silver Canyon Pottery was wonderful! This was one of a few activities I had booked during my short trip to Catalina Island. My friend and I were the only two people who signed up on the day that we attended, so it felt like our own personal tile making class! Robin (and her dog, Bailey) were so friendly and warm from the very start. Before we got our hands dirty with clay, Robin told us about the history of the island and tile making. Then we got to make our own tiles! The process of making our tiles was relatively quick and Robin guided us while making the first one. After that, she let us work on the remaining tiles ourselves but was around to assist us if we needed it. Once we finished making our tiles, we got to select the colors so Robin could paint them for us later on when it was time. I'm so excited to receive my completed tiles in the mail soon! I loved this experience so much and feel even more motivated to explore similar pottery classes in the future!!

This was an unexpected delight. I purchased this experience for my wife's birthday while visiting Catalina. Both of us thoroughly enjoyed making tiles with Robin, the incredibly talented potter who owns and operates Silver Canyon Pottery. She not only guides you through the process, but provides insightful and in depth history behind Catalina tiles and the island, but also the geology and how fine pottery is made. This is a highly recommended experience for anyone visiting Catalina. Robin's creations are available for purchase in her studio as well as at The Steamer Trunk store in town. Thank you, Robin. Give our best to Bailey, she's a good girl.

A highlight of our recent visit to Catalina was the fun time we had at Silver Canyon Pottery. Robin shared not only her skills as a potter, but provided deep insight into the history of the island, the geology of the state, and why the pottery business started on Catalina. Robin knows her stuff and was able to guide us through the process of creating our own tiles to be proudly displayed at home. Robin offers some of her own work in the shop. Her creations are also available at The Steamer Trunk shop in Avalon. This experience is highly recommended for any visitor to the island. Thank you, Robin. We can't wait to return to make more tiles!

Robin is amazing! I have done just about every tourist thing on this island and more. This was the most and best history lesson of the island, it was fun and we got to make some awesome memories to bring home. Totally worth it to see a small part of the island history. 10/10 recommend this if you are visiting the island and want to experience something that most won't. LOVE This was a super-great and fun experience. I adored making my own tiles and learning about the history of Catalina and its pottery. The owner is warm, authentic, and knowledgeable. I picked my own glaze colors and she mailed the tiles after they were glazed and fired. I also bought some tiles right out of the kiln. LIKE The quirky decor was really fun to browse. It's a nice walk from downtown Avalon. MEH It was a little hard to find. There's no sign at the entrance, and I missed it at first. ICK N/A

A visit to Silver Canyon Pottery was a highlight of a recent family trip to Avalon. Robin provided a wonderfully entertaining and enlightening experience which included history and geology of Catalina island, historical photographs and old items to peruse, and also creatively directing us in our efforts to make our own tiles. We then, after a few weeks, received a well padded and packaged parcel containing our finished, glazed, and fired completed tiles. They were beautiful!

Something unique while on vacation. This is a fun way to fill in the time between boat rides, shopping, and meals. Make your own ceramic decorative tile. Silver Canyon Pottery provides everything you need, all you have to do is have fun. After you have finished your creation, they will heat-fire your tiles and ship them to your destination. Not big on arts and crafts? No worries, simply brows through the inventory and pick what you like.

Picked up in town via taxi, and taken to their tile production facility. Actually, it was more homey, sort of like a ceramics workshop in a friend's garage. Robin, the Owner, gave our group of eight a Catalina tile history lesson, and ten proceeded to teach us how to pound clay into molds. She will fire and color them per each individual's direction. Tiles to be mailed in 6 weeks or so. It was a lot of fun.

This was so fun! Even my husband loved it. We each made two tiles. The tile making itself is surprisingly relaxing and so satisfying. I’m excited to take home more than just a random tshirt or mug souvenir like I normally do. These tiles can be hung up, framed or used as actual tiles in a home. Robin was the best, she is full of knowledge and interesting facts about the history of Catalina. We learned so much from her and will definitely be coming back next time we’re there!

Our family had a wonderful experience at Silver Canyon Pottery - from booking the class, to staying in touch regarding COVID-19, to making sure we had accurate directions, to the class itself, Robin made the pottery experience one of the highlights of our trip! We have visited the island many times, knew a little about the history of the tiles, and had always admired the artistry. Robin is very personable, as well as a great artist and teacher. Robin is a charming instructor. You’ll come out of her class knowing a little more about geology as well as some of Catalina’s history. And the best part is you’ll have a piece of your own Catalina history to hang on the wall after you get home! Her class is fun, informative and at the end of it, you’ll have 2 tiles to remind you of your visit to this lovely island. Highly recommend!

Robin is super nice and very experienced. 😁 The first time we came here we did the introductory class, where she explains the history of the Catalina pottery, shows you some examples, then walks you through the technique of making a tile or two. Since then, we've been back (almost every year) and made several more tiles, including some for a project for our house. My husband and two sons went with me the first time just to humor me, because I really wanted to try this, but they really enjoyed getting to make their own tiles and have looked forward to coming back every time. (They also like seeing her dog too ☺️). It's worthwhile, even if you don't consider yourself a crafty person. *Side note, her art studio is up a flight of stairs, so if you have mobility issues, you should call Robin first.* She's always been patient and helpful with us. (In case you're wondering...no, I was not compensated in any way for this review, I just wanted to share my experience and it's a fun, unique way to support a local business while learning a new skill)!

One of the best experiences or tours on the island. I have been to the island 4-5 times and wanted to do something a bit different. while I've been to the museum and heard about the history many times, Robin was able to share history that was new to me. She knows her stuff well. We made two tiles and ended up adding cork feet to ours to use as coasters. Robin mails them directly to you as well making it easy if you are flying home. The van to her studio was easy to find on the main boardwalk and a very short ride. The tour was very prompt and on time which was great. We did this from a cruise ship and has no issues catching the tenders and making it on time (and back on time!).

Robin's tile EXPERIENCE truly is worth a visit! Our family of 6+1 booked a time slot while we were on Catalina Island for just one night, two days. It was well worth the trip because we spent quality time together learning about the history of Catalina, tile production, and got to create our own very tile (or two). Online signup is easy, communication is clear, transport provided if needed, and then the finished tile is sent to your home intact! My 5 yo daughter and 10 yo nephew thoroughly enjoyed the instruction and hands on experience pounding out clay. Would recommend and would do again!

Whether this is your first time to the island, you've been there countless times or you are an islander - this is a Must Do! Though I live on the mainland, my family has resided on the island since the early 1900's. I visit all the time and I am very familiar with the island's history and specifically Catalina Pottery/Tile. However....it was all new when my sister and I attended Robin's class. Wow! She is extremely knowledgable, enthusiastic, talented and gifted at both her art and at teaching. There were 8 in attendance at the class ranging in ages 8 to 60+ She kept us all captivated with the history of the island, geology of the island and her beautiful tile art. After the history (which I could have listened to for hours), we got our hands in the clay and it was wonderful. Robin is a true islander and a delightful person. I will definitely do this again and again.

I've been coming to Catalina for 10 years and this is by far the most authentic experience I've had. Robin, a local islander, is a wealth of information about the island with depth in Native American and geological history that greatly filled out more recent history of brick/tile making. I was captivated by her enthusiasm and her skill - after class all I could spot when walking around the island was her tilework! You make your own tiles (first steps) in her studio and her crew will wrap up the firing and glaze and send them to you via mail. Going out to her studio gave my husband and I the chance to visit the east side of the island and pebbly beach - quieter and less frequented than the flats - which was a nice relief from cruise ship influx :) Happiest supporting local business - thanks for sharing your craft Robin!
